Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion (app. 15:00)
Orchestral score and parts available for rentals.
Commissioned by the Austrian Flute Society and Flutist Marina Piccinini of Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Conservatory. A concerto in three movements, which is both challenging and fun to the performers and listeners. From very contemporary textural sections to introspective and haunting chorales, the work also celebrates three traditional forms of Brazilian music: Choros, Baiao, and the Repentes of the Northeastern countryside.
Flute and Piano Reduction Version available from: Edition Kossack -- www.editionkossack.de -- at selected stores and internet music sales sites.
Chamber Symphony No. 1 - "Boa Viagem Shoreline" - for Small Ensemble, Contralto (or counter-tenor), Child Soprano (or coloratura soprano) and Percussion (app. 11:30)
Score and parts available for rentals or sales.
Recording with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Soloists and Conductor Dennis Russell Davies available for sale.
This Chamber Symphony is the first one in a cycle of three. The piece is a bit interactive - (some musicians also recite in regional dialects, shout, sing at times - blending natural voice with instruments - and the conductor has the option to interact with the audience at the end) - depicting a beautiful Brazilian seascape along with its many folklore beach vendors, ocean sounds, multitude of voices, and the stars at night. ...A car engine rumble (texture between a cello, double bass and percussion) turns into areligioso contrapuntal meditation almost a barroca later on... ¨The piece is at times quite textural also requiring virtuoso playing.
Sinfonia Concertante for Flute and Orchestra (app. 32:00)
Score and parts available for rentals.
Recording with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Flutist Wolfgang Schulz, principal of the Vienna Philharmonic, and Conductor Dennis Russell Davies available for sale.
The "Sinfonia Brasileira Concertante for Flute and Orchestra" includes a boldly orchestrated 1st movement containing rhapsodic themes, hypnotic" Brazilian rhythms and romantic passages; a sad, introspective and quasi-baroque 2nd movement, and a wild 3rd movement full of rhythm, energy and color called "The Dumb Donkey Called Jackass". Rather than being a "typical" flute concerto, with mainly light accompaniment textures under the solo flute and the occasional tutti, the work is very "symphonic", at times majestic, highlighting the flute.
AMAZONIA (Amazon), Symphonic Poem (app. 16:30)
Score and parts available for rentals.
Recording with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Conductor Dennis Russell Davies available for sale.
Performed several times at season concerts, and major festivals including the BIENAL in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the international festival IDRIART -- European world premiere in 2005 , Brucknerhaus Linz, Austria with Conductor Dennis Russell Davies and the Bruckner Orchester Linz. Including a full orchestra plus organ, piano and an expanded percussion section, the work has meditative, lush symphonic passages as well as aggressive moments, and "Brazilian atmospheres." It brings "romantic" moments and energetic, uniquely orchestrated Brazilian influenced rhythms and passages. The piece evokes the vastness and peace of the Amazon Rain Forest. It also reminds us of its ongoing destruction thus carrying an ecological message.
Piano Trio No. 1, A Choro - for Piano, Violin and Violoncello (app. 9:00)
Score and parts available for sale.
This one movement piano trio follows the old and nostalgic form of a Brazilian "Choro" and the old "Valsas de Esquina" ("Street Corner Waltzes"). The abundance of thematic cells in the beginning is therefore intentional. They are all developed, interlinked and recapitulated during the piece. The choro, much in fashion during turn-of-the-century Brazil and its "belle epoch”, can be said to be the predecessor of certain genres of Brazilian popular music and forms of the modern Samba. Its melodies were much inspired by French and Italian singing at the time and its rhythms and flair were born in the old streets of Rio de Janeiro. This Piano Trio purposely evokes the rhapsodic, nostalgic and romantic aspect of the Choro together with Brazilian rhythmic energy.
Stop It! For Double Bass and Violoncello (app. 7:00)
Parts available for sale.
Commissioned by the Chicago Composers Consortium.
Rosenfeld Variations for String Orchestra or String Quintet:
Theme, Chorale, Scherzo, Lullaby, Brazilian Children's Dance, Largo, Fuga a Barroca (app. 20:00)
Score and parts available for rentals or sale.
The point behind the Theme and Variations for Strings "Rosenfeld" (1990) was to come up with a rather trivial thematic cell - even with a touch of irony and humor - and transfigure, develop it into various scenarios which would include modern, romantic, baroque and Brazilian atmospheres. The "theme," (which came up at a gathering with the Rosenfelds, dear friends - by now no longer among us - and ardent music lovers) was developed and disguised into different musical forms and moods: "Chorale", "Scherzo", "Lullaby" and "Brazilian Children's Dance,"* "Largo" and "Fuga a Barroca".
* "Lullaby and Brazilian Children's Dance" can be approached as an individual set and performed separately as a piece on their own.
